Block B Elementary Functions PSP:p.166 45-51
Block C Elementary Functions PSP: Study for the test -- the chapter review in the end of the chapter has great practice problems to work on. The only topic we did not cover (we will later this year) is piecewise defined functions. The rest of the section is fair game. As I said in class, look for one of the acid mixture problems like last night's #32, look for questions around the vocabulary (one to one, domain, continuity, boundedness, interval, increasing, vertex, range, ect.), and properties of functions (domain, range, asymptotes).

Looking over the final exams, I think everyone has a good chance at doing very well. The 3 open ended problems will be given first, and cover 3 of the four:
Quadratic Regression (from chapter 2)
Logistic Model (like the Flu problem from chapter 3)
Car problem (from chapter 4 section 8 -- you observe a car from two different angles...)
How tall/far is the tree problem (chapter 5, law of sines and cosines)
The multiple choice has 10 no-calculator problems that are mostly trig related. Study sign of the cosine and sine around the unit circle and the values for sine, cosine and tangent for the angles 0,30,45,60,90. Understanding reference angles is a must.
The rest of the multiple choice is very heavy on chapters 3 and 4. The other topics would just be basic properties of functions (domain, range, continuity, boundedness) and factoring.
Tomorrow in class I will have compiled your homework from this week and selected some of the better problems that most model exam questions. I will also have a few practice open ended questions to go over so you are familiar with the format. Be sure to take the time this weekend, as well as next week studying -- it will pay off immensely and you'll have almost 3 months to completely relax and not have to worry about classes!

Wow, it's June already.
Both classes: On a half sheet of paper, write two problems that you might find in Chapter 1 of our book, as well as the solution. You may select problems directly from the book, but be sure to write the page and number of the problem number with the question.
We will continue this assignment through the week with Chapter 2 being Tuesday, 3 Wednesday ect. I will select those most representative of the final exam from each day and copy for all to study from.
Speaking of studying -- topics from Chapter 1 that you should study:
The Vertical line test
The horizontal line test
the zero factor property (zero product property)
odd / even functions
translations (a , h and k: what they all do)
reflections
root, zero, x intercept
finding the inverse

Block B Elementary Functions PSP: Look below for an opportunity for extra points. Also, I will be giving out the take home test tomorrow in class -- be sure to get one before Prom!
Block C Elementary Functions PSP: P.468 1-17 odd, skip 7 and 15 * I did not mention this in class, but you may skip these two. Also, I will be giving out the take home test tomorrow in class -- be sure to get one before Prom!
-- A chance to make up some points --
You have already done two projects this semester, so I am offering a third optional project to make up some points from chapter 4. The project will be worth up to 25 EXAM points, and will be applied directly to your scores on the chapter 4 test/quizzes. You will only be able to apply up to the number of points that would have given you 90% score for the exam, and any additional points will be forfeited.
For the project, you should complete the tasks on page 442 of your book, using the data given. For full credit, you must discover a,b,h, and k ON YOUR OWN, without using the regression equation to get the values. You must also write HOW you found the values, and why you know they are correct or make sense.

Remember, there are two "tests" on Monday. First is the homework test -- i will select 5 problems, one from each of the last 5 homework assignments and ask you to write out the solutions. Be sure you have your work organized! The other test will be 10 topics from the chapter (chapter 3) and 1-5 questions about each topic. Look at the following problems from the chapter review for a good idea of what will be on the test: P. 345 5-17odd ,27-30 (and harder problems like them with a calculator) ,31-34, 43-50, 63-65, 74 and one problem like p317, 9-12. What to expect.
Wednesday: We will be taking the chapter 2 test. This should take most of the block, if not all. I will be distributing the project for spring break. This will allow you some time to possibly get the project done BEFORE break – I suggest that you do your best to have something together by Friday, and tidy things up over break.
Thursday: We will be attending the opera during blocks B and C. Obviously there is no new work for this time.
Friday: Class will be shortened due to the early dismissal; we will be working on the project during class. I will be around to help people get through, and will offer computers to type your project.

Block B Elementary Functions PSP: P. 165, 1-18all. Realize what a large focus is put on these basic functions, and knowing the domain and range of any function. These are two of the most basic, yet important pieces to the course. In the coming chapters, we will be working with each of the functions and transforming them by moving them up, down, left, right and streching or shrinking them. Being able to correctly identify the type of function, as well as its respective domain and range is key to the course.

Block B Elementary Functions PSP: I did not check homework today to be sure you had the assignment... This means I will be checking 3 days worth of assignments TOMORROW starting with what was due on Monday.
Due Monday: P.102 3,4,5,6,9,10,17,18,20,21,24,26,32,34,44,46,47,48,52
Due Tuesday (today): P. 160-161 1-10 all and 23-33 odd
Due Wednesday: P.114 35-42 all
All three will be checked and given equal credit as separate assignments -- try to be sure to have all 3 for full credit. Also, because my tissues have all disappeared, if you bring a new box of tissues in for the class, you will receive a no-homework pass that you can use at any date for one assignment. I will honor this offer through the rest of the week.

I am sorry about the delay in updates, I am having trouble accessing the site to POST at school. For some reason I can view, but not edit or create posts at school, and this is causing me trouble keeping this site up to date. I hope to have it completely remedied by the end of next week, but in the mean time check back or ask a friend to be sure you have the correct assignment.

Block B Elementary Functions PSP: Please finish the assignment from class on Thursday. See you on Monday!
Block C Elementary Functions PSP: Sorry for the delay in posting. I hope you all enjoyed the show today, and congratulations on a fine job to all that were in it.
The assignment is to finish the problem from class: A boy wants to hit a baseball high enough to hit an airplane that is 5280ft high in the air. What is the initial upward velocity that he must pass on to the ball for it to soar at least as high as the airplane?
In class we worked through much of the problem. I will try to list the information that we have produced, but you should try to work through from start to finish.
First, we "know" two points: ( 0,0 ) and ( tf,0 ) {tf = time final} The problem implies another point, ( tf/2,5280 ) -- this point would be the vertex of the parabola, and would be between any two points with the same y-value.
We have the vertical motion formula: h(t)= -16t^2 + vt +h where h(t) is the height at time t, t is the time, v is the velocity, and h is the initial height. Plugging in the vertex, we solved for v as v=(10560/tf)+4tf
Work through by plugging in the points you know and the velocity from above. You should be able to find an actual value for velocity. Once you get your answer, reread the question and adjust accordingly. Good luck!

What to study
Geometry PSP: Be sure to look over surface area, pythagorean theorem, similar triangles and triangle properties
Elementary Functions PSP: Logistic equations and their properties: specifically domain and range, limits to growth (or decay), y-intercept, and rate of growth.
Here is a zip file that has scanned copies of the old book. It holds several files containing problems from different sections. I would suggest you look through these and work through them as a review. I have solutions and you can either ask for them in class or via email. It is a 4mb file, so it may take a minute to download, but should be worth it. Look at the file HwP279, there are some good practice problems on page 280. P313 has some good exponential/log problems, and P418 has good trigonometry review problems. The file review holds good problems asking about domain/range and properties of the 12 basic functions. Expect several on Thursday's final...

Note for Geometry classes: The final exam will be split into 3 sections this year. The first section will be given on the 16th, and will be an open ended formatted exam. The second section is a multiple choice type test, and will be given on the 20th. This second section will focus on chapters 1 through 6. The final section of the exam will be given on the 22nd or 23rd, depending on what block you have Geometry. This final section is also multiple choice and will focus on chapters 7-12. The first two sections are a full block, and the third is designed to be a 60 minute exam. More news is to follow.
Block B Elementary Functions PSP: Look at P.745, it is not formally assigned, but you will be responsible for the content. We looked at double angle identities. I would look through problems 1-7, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19, 23-26, 31-36. Tomorrow is Law of Sines day, Thursday is Law of Cosines day. As for final exam news, I am 95% sure that your open ended exam will be January 20th during class and the multiple choice will be on the 22nd. Both are district created and I have a good idea of what we need to review between now and then.
Block C Geometry PSP: P. 733 3-33 multiples of 3, 33 is the featured problem
